As for the RO'S I was at knob creek one day last year when a range officer called for a hot line it was at that point several of us shooters let him know that there was still a person down range hanging a target at the back of the range not sure but had it not been for a few of us regular shooters who are careful there is a fellow who might not have made the trip home. This is not something I heard but witnessed.
Our ranges are small compared to your ranges. We have a 110 yard range that is only about 8 yards wide. We get brass from the other shooter all the time. It takes getting used to and after that it doesn't bother you anymore. There's also people whining about talking on the range while shooting. To me, it has made me a better shooter as I don't get distracted that easily anymore.

We also have a large military range where we can go and the RO's there are military. It's very strict and if you don't like it? You can leave, no discussion (by the way, we have an unwritten rule to never argue with the RO on the line. If you have an issue, you go to the range manager or talk to the RO as soon as he's got time for you and has a replacement for him).

Regarding the mistake the RO made in your story: it's stupid but it happens unfortunately. Luckily there are shooters like you who also take responsibility and will call it. Only this year we had a similar situation at a dynamic rifle match in the west of our country. Shooter already had the start signal and just placed a magazine in his custom Sig 551 and was ready to shoot his first shot when he suddenly got a FREEZE! Two of the setters came strolling back from down range...

Accidents do happen. Even range officers are human. To prevent stuff like this, you'll need a good overview. Will you have a good overview if your shooters are scattered along the line or if they are right next to eachother? And even then, at KCR you have about 3 to 4 times the amount of speace between the shooters then what we get overhere.

Good points I agree totally, I shoot an M1 Garand and an M-14 national match rifle both heavy caliber weapons that throw brass 2 and 3 tables to my right and shooters get very annoyed when ejects are pounding off their nice Weatherby deer rifle, I never argue with the RO's as a matter a fact I rarely if ever even talk to them. The KCR RO'S generally display a demeanor of do not approach or talk to me. Just seems pointless to me to have 46 tables and you are only allowed access to 20 because as the RO'S stated it gets tiresome to walk the whole line 9 hours a day. I do not have the luxury at my job to pick and choose the tasks I am willing to perform. Must be nice.

OK, that's a difference with us then. We do talk to the shooters and the shooters talk to us. I'm a friendly guy normally but can be harsh when needed, but only when it's needed. No point in bitching to people f they haven't done anything wrong yet.

Not sure if it's the same guy but last KCR shoot I was already at the range to built the subgun course on Wednesday and Thursday. While going for some food we walked passed the main firing line and I saw a Dragunov on a table. Gate was open and there was someone near the rifle so I walked under the roof and started chatting to the guy. An older RO walked upto me and asked if I had a stamp (???) and if not I had to leave. It wasn't a friendly chat but just a short phrase telling me to go behind the fence. Obviously I obliged but he could have said it more friendly. He didn't. His choice and I didn't argue. No point. I was wrong but didn't know the rules. I could have asked obviously. The shooter came to me on my side of the fence to talk more about the rifle and thus the problem was settled.

I do understand what you are saying about the space being roped off when there's way more space. I can also see it from an RO point of view though.

Have you guys been talking about the weekday or weekend range manager? I shot Saturday afternoon for a good 3 hours and the guy running the range has always run the range when I've been there on weekends for the past 18 months. He runs a tight range but I don't think he goes overboard on anything. Especially when all the tables are full and half are newbies, like me. I'd rather he be a hard-ass if it keeps me from going home with a new piercing... or worse yet handcuffs cause I did something stupid.
