Public Use Outdoor Ranges

I have been looking to do some outdoors shooting since the weather is getting nicer, but other than Knob Creek I can't find any outdoor ranges. I don't have anything against Knob Creek and will go there if that is all that is available, but wanted to ask here since I am not familiar with the area.

So other that K.C. are there any ranges near Louisville that allow the public to shoot pistols/rifles outdoors?

Otter creek park, out near knob creek, has a TUBE rifle range. Not sure if its ope to the public yet though. And a lot of guys here go to New Haven, not sure the real name of the place. From what i understand its a trap shooting range that they use for everything. PM reverand dreed about that one(i think its him who takes care of it or something like that). Other than those i dont know of any others.

There is one at Clark State Forest about 20 miles north of Louisville. From what I hear you definitely want to go on a weekday morning though.

That's in Henryville, IN. Always busy, you usually will have to wait a few minutes to shoot unless you go on a weekday morning like Jason suggested. It's also super muddy, no shelter, you have to get over a creek and walk through a lot of deep mud to get to your targets if you're shooting at any distance. Still a decent place to go, and free. There's another free range right by Taylorsville Lake State that's much nicer, has shelter and shooting tubes and everything, however they are only allowing 100 yd shooting right now, nothing closer. Also the tubes are stupid and annoying to shoot through.

Thanks for all the tips everyone. I'm going out either this weekend or next depending on a few scheduling details. Looking forward to trying some stuff out at distance and just plinking with the pistols.

Will do. I post a report about the range along with the guns I shoot. Unfortunately of my friends going I am the "gun guy" so there won't be anything new or exotic for me to try out.

I just heard ft knox is letting civilians on post to use french range.

Actually the range in new haven (Lincoln Trail fish and Game club) is private.

that is it is for members and thier guests. you must be a member or the guest of a member to shoot there.

I can sign up new members but a policy I have put upon myself is to not sign up anyone whom I have not met and shot with. This is something I do and is not range policy, but after a few folks that did not abide by the few rules they have I just wont sign up just anyone anymore.

Nice. My dad has 10 acres in Taylorsville I usually shoot at. I'm out there all the time. I'll have to check that place out.

i think it sucks i wont be back if your shooting anything with a 20 round or more mag forget it and don't bother taking spotting scope nowhere to set it up the tubes are to small the grounds however are very nice for whatever that is worth
