Default Cabela's Louisville

Waited in the rain yesterday morning for the grand opening of Cabela's new store in Louisville. I made two more stops throughout the day.

They seemed to have made a real effort to have a very good selection of ammo and reloading items. It was obvious several items had been transferred from other stores, worn boxes; not complaining full shelves are a welcome site around here. I didn't get to checkout the firearms. The shelves where quickly bare of all 22 rimfire (except shot shells) and most 9mm (there where some very expensive boxes left) within a few minutes of opening.

Picked up a few items:

BB's (2500x2)
22lr (100rnd CCI)
22lr shot shells (50rnd)
22mag (50rnd CCI)
38sp (50rnd target)
38sp hp +P (50rnd)
223 (4x50rnd Fiocchi Extrema V-Max in a plastic can) pricey
7.62x39 (540rnd spam can)
7.62x39 (3x20rnd)

Federal #200 sm pistol magnum primers (brick)
CCI #209 shot shell primers (brick)

I was looking for a case, brick, or bulk 22lr, they had none.

I will be checking the store daily for the next week or so to see what they restock.

Store opening events and info:

I'm looking forward to it but I can't deal with those crowds right now. I plan on trying to get in there some time next week. I drive by it every day so it will be real convenient for me.

I went yesterday and it was ungodly packed. I made the mistake of going in my work shirt .. a blue polo and got about a million questions about ammo when I was looking.

I noticed ALOT of people buying ammo that they did not own guns for ... you would hear they say "will this sell?" As they grabbed they Max amount of. 223 then getting confused about the prices / type of round .. brass or steel

Default Cabela's (day two)

I went with a friend again this morning; about 20 till nine. There was a line waiting, but nothing to worry about. I got several 100rnd boxes of 22 long rifle, a couple boxes of 22 magnum, some expensive 357, and a 200rnd bulk pack of 223. Well worth the early stop. The 22lr lasted about 40 minutes. Still no 9mm.

Wish I had time to go during the week. Guess I'll try and get lucky for some 22lr on the weekends.

My advice is get there before they open & get in line. the signs say there are limits on ammo but the cashiers weren't enforcing it
(that I saw)

Default Cabela's (day three)

Got in line (Saturday) about 8:45, checked out at 9:20. Lots of people looking for 22lr. I got my limit. They put out ten 640rnd spam cans of 7.62x39; $190 plus tax. They may last an hour or so, a couple took two as I got mine.

A really nice well stocked store with lots of quality clothing and gear, but not many of the exciting bargains or specials I would expected for a major grand opening. I picked up a few one off discounted items from the bargain cave in the far right corner.

Default Cabela's - Ammo Limits (this week)

The posted Ammo Buying Limits currently are:

100 total rounds of 22 rim-fire
or
5 boxes of center-fire
or
1 bulk pack

In the department the clerks will explain the rules if you ask. Some signs list several rules and other signs just the rule for the adjacent material. This leads to some confusion when boxes of 22lr are stocked on an end cap with a sign explaining the rule for center-fire ammo (which was what was stocked there on opening day).

While clerks in the department are constantly explaining the limit rules and pointing to various signs, the cashiers are not currently ridgedly enforcing the limits. Cashiers likely do not have a good understanding of what is a bulk pack of ammo and that five boxes of 22 is different from five boxes of center-fire. There appears to be an unofficial (or an official) policy of not enforcing the posted rules and keeping the customers happy. I have had cashiers say we are not enforcing the limits today and I have seen managers carrying ammo away from the register area (perhaps just customer rejects).

I live nearby and am already a familiar face. I am following the rules for the most part; I have been assuming that when they said 'or' they really meant and/or. My typical purchase has been a bulk pack, a box of 22lr, and three more boxes of whatever. I have not seen or inquired if the limits are daily or per trip. I have checked out twice with ammo each day, always with five or less items. I have seen others with non-shooting friends in tow.

Cabela's does not currently have any bulk 22lr. They have put out a limited amount of CCI 100rnd mini-mags in plastic boxes each morning, which sell out shortly after opening. It will be interesting to see if this practice continues next week.

Default This explains a few things.

I learned something chatting up a vendor this afternoon. Apparently early last week before the public grand opening there was a two hour invitation only evening pre-opening sales event for vendors and Cabela's employees.

Great idea but, that is where all the bulk packs and bricks of 22lr went to. My source said by the time he got there all that was left was a few boxes of fifty's.

This possibly explains why several signs in the ammo department referenced items not there on opening day. Not just shelf tags but the limit signs also referred to items not to be found.

It's going to be a long time before 22lr is readily available again. People are absolutely bonkers over it right now.

Yep I was up there Tuesday and picked up a bulk pack of 22lr. and there was a crowd in the entire ammo section. I will say the ammo selection was good, but I'm sure it won't last. I was happy to see they carry Silver State Armory ammo and 6.8 spc.

Keenes has 1,000 rnd cases for $329 big stacks of them. I don't see me heading up to Cabelas anytime soon, the savings wont offset the gas price. I will check them out someday when I have to be in Louisville for some other reason. Yesterday Keenes had 2 Kimber solo's instock.

I wish their website would reflect that. I'd gladly pay .33/rnd right now & it will be weeks before I have another free Sat to waste on a trip down there to see what they do or don't actually have.

jmeister, right now, the way merchandise is coming in and going out of the store, I doubt they can keep the website current. Keene's is a five minute detour for me on my way home from work so I stop in two or three (or four or five) times a week. Every day there are new pallets of gear and ammo being unpacked.

Talking with a couple of people there, it sounds like for now the ammunition sells out so fast to local people that there's no need to work at advertising it. I've watched full pallets of 9mm, .223, .40, and .45 sell off within a day.

If there's ever anything you (or anyone else) want to check on just say the word. I really don't need much of an excuse to go see what they have on any given day. I'll be going up tomorrow. I can go Friday and verify that they still have the 7.62x39 rounds or not so you don't waste a trip down.

I need some wolf 9mm ammo. They had it before at 15 a box, was hoping it would settle down a little bit. Couple of rifles like that brand best.

I'll keep an eye on the inbox.

Dave, this past week the Wolf was $14 a box and the Tula was $15. They were almost out of the Wolf on Friday though.
