I went to Lawrenceburg yesterday..usually find some trinket down there to drag home, not so this time. I was looking for a Taurus PT1911 and found three...all "new in the box". Hmmmm. I picked one up and asked how much. $565.."it's new". I didn't really look at it that close and made my first round then went back and it was still laying there. I'm thinking if he'll come down a little I'll take it home. This time I did look closely at this "new gun" and saw it had the blue off the muzzle and a couple of shiny marks on the slide that looked like they were made from a competition retention holster maybe? That didn't really bother me, so I asked him again what his best price was....get ready....$765. I thought "hory clap"... I said "no, not the Colt (which was lying next to it), the Taurus". He sez, "$765, it's had a lot of work done to it". In less than an hour the "new gun" had gone up $200 and had a lot of work done to it. That seems to be the state of gun shows anymore. Had I not been so dumbfounded when he said it had a lot of work done to it, I would have asked.."show me". I guess someone did look at it close and called him on it and he made up a new story. He's moved into first place in my "Gunshow Idiot" category.
Anyway. |

crap like that is why I go to fewer and fewer gun shows... too much BS going around now. I think I'll stick to my gun forums and the 2 gun stores I go to now lol... I like the people there.. mostly

I've never been to a show and stuff like this makes me think I'm not missing out on anything.

Not everyone at the gun shows are idiots, only seems like about 90% of them are.

I know of the guy from which you speak, he was towards the back corner I believe. He was walking around and asked me about a gun I had. I told him the price and thought he was having a hard attack. I explained the cost of the rifle, scope, and accessories and the price was well under what those cost. I just laughed when I asked him about his taurus. most of the lone, non-licensed dealers are just looking to trade or to find a sucker who doesn't know any better. |

Sounds like the right one in the right place. I only saw three. One was a two tone, this one had the rubber slip on grip over wood and was on a table at the back and a little to the right when you entered. Maybe he thougt all the "extras" were really extra, after all, the Colt lying there didn't have the beavertail safety, the ambi thumb safety and the other stuff standard on the Taurus. Tha's ok...I still have my ol' raggedy-assid Colt.

This is what gun shows have gone to though since a few people think they can pull stuff like this. I have got to where I do not even want to go to them anymore. Not stealing this thread, but I was at the show in Bowling Green looking at some pmags, the guy had a few silenced rifles on the table next to where I was, he was giving a guy the spill on the decibels blah blah blah and then I actually heard him tell a customer that he could buy the one he was looking at and take it with him, fill his paperwork out later and send in for his tax stamp "if he wanted to". It is people like this that bring the cloud to everyone that does it by the book. I would have liked to have watched him walked by the ATF table with it on his way out, lol.

I go to look for the older pieces. I looked at one P38, the guy looked me dead in the face and said; "all matching - $650". I looked down at the pistol in my hand and the reciever and slide were mismatched - looked like one of the P38's SOG was selling for $350. I inquired as to the mismatch and was promptly ignored as If I wasn't standing there.
I watch the dealers descend on the oldtimers with war trophies like buzzards on roadkill trying their best to screw them. Gun show use to be where you could find good deals and were in place to sell guns, as of late I see more dealers buying than selling with chump deals. Many that do sell are above retail - why bother. Hell, entrance - $12, Parking -$8, and then there's gas getting there, God help ya if you get hungry and decide to eat there. All the additional expense to buy over retail? Your best deal is on forums, GB, or local gunshops. |
